The lone TBM (Avenger) Torpedo Plane burns on
the flight deck after a Japanese suicide attack.
"The
pilot Howard Skidmore, with crew Don Hambridge
and Danny Mc Carthy were in the TBM hooked up to the
cat ready for a launch, fully fueled and loaded with four
500-pound bombs when the kamikaze clipped their plane,
sheared off the propeller and crashed just ahead of them
on their port side and exploded. Another Japenese plane
was shot down down close to the Cabot and crashed
into the port side amidships. With an inferno burning
all around them, Howard ordered his crew out of the
plane and they ran for cover."
